Non-Filer Travel Ban Excludes NICOP Holders, Minors, and Students
Islamabad, June 3, 2024 โ The proposed ban on overseas travel for non-tax filers will not apply to holders of the National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP), minors, students, and other categories notified by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), according to Business Recorder.
Key Exemptions:
– NICOP Holders
– Minors
– Students
– Other Categories Notified by the FBR
The Finance Bill 2024 proposes this travel ban as part of broader efforts to encourage tax return filing among Pakistani citizens. The initiative aims to tighten regulations on non-filers by restricting their ability to travel abroad, thus incentivizing compliance with tax laws.
Additional Measures:
– Increased Business Transaction Taxes: Significant tax hikes for non-filers on business transactions.
– Property Holding Tax: A 45% tax on properties held by non-filers.
– Utility Disconnections: Previous preparations to cut off electricity and gas connections for 3 million non-filers.
The federal government has presented a budget of 18,877 billion rupees for the fiscal year 2024-25. In his budget speech, the Finance Minister highlighted the necessity of these measures to boost tax compliance and revenue generation.
The proposed ban has sparked mixed reactions, with non-filers expressing discontent, while netizens have taken to social media to share humorous takes on the 2024-2025 budget.
